Squawking Magpie Syrah 2017, Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay

A distinctive bouquet with a steely, spicy, woody and fruity attack on the nose. Black currant, plum and old raspberry aromas lead to scents of toasty wood and baking spices, peppercorn and crushed rock earthy qualities. On the palate - very tense with lots of nervous energy helped along with bold tannins and a back bone of acidity. The structure overall is big and strong tempered by toasty wood, a core of red fruit and alcohol. The second & third sips reveal show emerging flavours of raspberry, tart plum and cherry. An abundance of firm tannins, nice mid-palate weight and a lengthy finish complete the palate showing that this wine needs a lot more cellar time, but all the elements are in place to allow an already delicious, bold wine to age and do nothing, but get better. Decant for service. Best drinking 2022 through 2030.
