Kely Estate Merlot 2015, Northland

There’s no mistaking many of the aromas as the wine opens up in glass from tobacco and dark plums to smoky wood and blackberry. There’s a mix of leather and clove, old violet and preserves. On the palate - toasty, smoky, integrating and dry. Flavours of the fruits show first with dark plum then wood with a cigar note. Tannins are firm-ish, dusty and abundant. Acidity is medium and there’s a nice earthy oaky quality on the finish. Balanced and well made - a wine that will continue to integrate and evolve over the next 3-5 years. Best drinking from today and through 208+.
