Unlikely Companions Rose and Szechuan Gin, New Zealand
Uncut: Juniper then spice, peppercorn then lemon, floral then mineral. The bouquet is direct and focused, definitive and confident. On the palate a smooth almost satin landing then a rush of spice and coriander take over. Some heat from the alcohol then develops, especially on the second sip. A powerful gin with a persistent flavours profile, quite complex, direct and different. Lengthy and seems delicious on its own.
Cut with Antipodes Water: The bouquet explodes, made me sneeze as the szechuan spice and I meet properly. On the send and third sips the essence of roses and spice begin to melt into the core fabric of the gin with coriander and juniper also at play. A delicious gin. I don’t think water is the right way to go, perhaps a decent though plainer tonic would work better, I’ll let you know.
