Frenchmans Hill Estate Expatrius Syrah 2012, Waiheke Island

It is fantastic to be able to taste and report on a wine with this much bottle age…..aromas of a varietal and developing wine, scents of earth and stone, dark berries, leather and spice, wood smoke and violets. The bouquet overall is sound and inviting. There are scents of bottle-age as well with some fallen leaves and dried fruits. Spices of vanilla and clove cover the fresh and dried spectrum. Complex and dry on the palate with flavours that reflect the bouquet, dried plum and raspberry, black currant and marmite, leather and darker baking spices, dried rose and clay. Fine integrated tannins and the acid line still lovely. In balance, well made and lengthy. Best drinking from 2023 through 2030.
