Penfolds 'Bin 704' Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Napa Valley, USA
I have long admired Penfolds - as a company and with an excellent range of wines. This Bin 704 is an excellent example of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley - it boasts a bouquet of dark berries and baked plums, clove and vanilla pod, there’s plenty of new wood and toasty smoky tones showcasing the youth this wine still holds onto. On the palate - fuller bodied, dry, there’s no mistaking the tannins from fruit and wood then baking spices of vanilla and clove. The core is dark berry fruit flavours, iron and roasted meat. There’s a deliciousness that makes me want to keep sipping, it’s also making me hungry - and that is a good thing as well. Plenty of length and complexity, a wine drinking best from 2028 through 2038+.

I tasted this wine with friend and well respected winemaker James Rowan, I commented that it was a bold move to make a 100% Cabernet, it works extremely well, but I also commented that I would loved to have tasted the complexities that a % of Cabernet Franc and Merlot may have added to this wine. I did not mean this as a criticism, but more of a nod to the winemaking and how successful this example is as a 100% CS.
