Muddy Water Pinotage 2017, Waipara

muddywaterpinot.png

A reminder for those readers who are unsure about Pinotage - it is a variety that was developed in South Africa from a crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault.

This example - grown in north Canterbury - showcases aromas of dark red cherries and black fruits, a quiet savoury core of dried herbs then clay and silty soil moments. The oak scents remind me of clove, smoke and toasty wood. On the palate - warm, fruity and complex with flavours of fruits that reflect the nose, firm tannins and medium acidity. Almost full-bodied, very stylish and an excellent example of Pinotage in a New Zealand context. Best drinking from 2021 through 2031.
