Paritua seeks 'a seat at the table' with 21·12

Last week Paritua confidently put forward their flagship wine, 21·12, in a comparative tasting alongside some of New Zealand’s top Bordeaux blends. I recently tasted their 2018 vintage, the current release. Put simply, this wine is outstanding. The Hawkes Bay wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (20%), and Cabernet Franc (15%). Looking at the list of wines also present at the tasting, it appears attendees were treated to some fine New Zealand wines. Below is a press release from Atelier Nash who hosted the tasting for Paritua.

Paritua seeks 'a seat at the table' with 21·12

The winemaking team at Paritua have one simple aim, to have 21·12 placed alongside the greatest Bordeaux Blends New Zealand has ever produced. For the release of 21·12, Paritua’s flagship wine, they went ‘Beyond Bordeaux’ and confidently lined up 21·12 shoulder to shoulder with some of New Zealand’s best Cabernet based wines.

Those at the Beyond Bordeaux tasting, hosted by Atelier Nash were taken through eight legendary Bordeaux blends from New Zealand by Paritua Winemaker Jason Stent.

  1. Paritua 21·12 2018

  2. Stonyridge Larose 2018

  3. Te Mata Coleraine 2018

  4. Craggy Range Sophia 2018

  5. Puriri Hills Pope 2014

  6. Villa Maria Ngakirikiri 2014

  7. Church Road Tom 2016

  8. Paritua 21·12 2013

Although a mix of vintages and varying blends of Bordeaux varieties, two things were apparent. First, just how approachable, generous and plush the 2018 Paritua 21.12 was, and the 2013 proved just how much life was left in this flagship wine. Second, New Zealand produces world-class, incredible, Cabernet based wines. The attendees were then treated to 2014 Paritua 21.12, from one of the greatest vintages Hawkes Bay has produced.

2018 Paritua 21.12 scores:

96 points – Bob Campbell MW
98 points – Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
97 points – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

More about Paritua:

At Paritua we appreciate that truly great wine speaks of the land in which it was born. Our vineyard is in the heart of the acclaimed Bridge Pa Triangle wine region of Hawke’s Bay where we endure exceptional conditions that create exceptional wines. The name Paritua is a tribute to the Paritua Stream, which meanders gently through the vineyard and means, ‘the meandering stream above the ancient river’. The vineyard is planted over the historical riverbed of the nearby Ngaruroro River which flowed through pre the 1860s earthquake. It is a name that also acknowledges the connection with the land and the people of New Zealand.
